DTE Energy issues RFP for 450 MW of standalone energy storage
DTE Energy has submitted a request for proposal (RFP) for new independent energy storage projects of a total of approximately 450 MW. These projects will support DTE Electrics CleanVision Integrated Resource Plan And Michigan’s new standard of 60% renewable energy by 2030, both of which contribute to the umbrella goals of DTE’s umbrella carbon reduction.
The RFP requires that the independent energy storage projects reach commercial operation before 31 December 2028. Projects must be in Michigan and are interconnected with the midcontinent independent system operator or transmission at distribution level. Interested bidders must register their company information on the PowerAdvocate website and, once registered, can attend a virtual pre-RFP conference on 25 March 2025. Bids are due on 27 June 2025 and DTE expected to carry out contracts by Q1 2026.
“With the growth of DTE’s fleet of renewable energy generation, energy storage facilities are necessary for the transformation of clean energy from Michigan,” said Chuck Conlen, VP of clean energy and acquisitions at DTE Energy. “DTE is proud to develop safe energy storage to support clean, reliable and affordable energy supply to our customers.”
DTE currently owns and operates three energy storage facilities in Michigan, including the Ludington Pumped Storage Plant, a hydroelectric power station and long-term storage facility on the banks of Lake Michigan co-ownership of consumer energy; And two battery storage facilities on solar energy sites. In addition, DTE’s 14-MW Lithium-ion Slocum battery storage system in Trenton, Michigan is now commercially operational and in 2024 the construction of his Trenton Channel Energy Center started. When completed in 2026, this will be 220 Megawatt storage center for battery energy at the location of the retired Trenton Channel coal plant of DTE is expected to be the largest independent battery energy storage project in the Great Lakes area.
By 2042, DTE is planning to have 2,950 megawatt energy storage capacity in its portfolio, more than doubling the amount that the company has today.
